Looking for work can be time consuming and frustrating. But when you have a strategy in place you will be able to focus on your goal and avoid running around wasting time. This month we are bringing you a list of vacancy sources to help you land that dream job.

1. Friends and family:
We can't stress the importance of family and friends enough. They are already working for a company, they have access to the notice boards or emails announcing vacancies, they can ask HR whether anything is open and above all: They can tell you about it. Sit down and make a list of everyone you think might be able to assist you and give them a call. Ask them to keep their eyes open at the office and to inform you as soon as they can if there is an opportunity. Network!

2. Vacancies in the newspaper:
Before buying a newspaper you need to establish which newspaper is the premier source of vacancies for your city and / or position of interest. Different companies might be advertising in different newspapers. Your library should be getting a number of newspapers every morning and it is a good idea to visit the library early in the morning to scan the newspapers for new opportunities. Mark positions of interest, email your CV to the correct person and follow up with a phone call.

3. Get on the www:
Research all the big employment, career and vacancy websites and select a few that you will be able to visit regularly. Register your CV if this is an option - this will help possible employers to find you. Make sure you visit these websites at least once a day otherwise you might miss any new vacancies. Remember a lot of vacancies are now advertised without a closing date and the recruitment agents will close the vacancy as soon as they think they have enough candidates. This means that you have to make sure you look for and apply on a daily basis.

4. Get yourself an agent:
An employment agent that is. Employment consultants work on commission and they therefore have a vested interest in placing as many people as possible.

5. Knock on doors:
If you are confident enough you may want to consider cold calling. Make sure you have a copy of your CV with you and be prepared for a lot of "Mr X is not in today" or "Ms Y is in a meeting at the moment". However, you might just be able to get to see a few people and make the right impression.

6. Consider volunteering:
Volunteering is an excellent way to gain experience and to get references. You can volunteer at a charity or at a big organisation. Contain the Human Resources department and explain that you are willing to work for the opportunity to gain experience. One of the big advantages of volunteering is that someone might resign while you are working there and you are then in an excellent position to apply for the vacancy.
